About Our Lawyers

John H. Ewen

John is experienced in the area of Family Law. He has advised clients on countless Separation Agreements and Family Court matters.  He is trained in Collaborative Family law practice and has worked at law firms in Simcoe County and Waterloo Region. He has acted on cases at all levels of Court in Ontario including the Ontario Court of Appeal.

John has expertise in many different areas of Family Law including Parenting (Custody/Access), Child Support, Spousal Support, Property Division and Equalization, Restraining Orders, Family Responsibility Office matters, Marriage Contracts and Cohabitation Agreements.

There are many different process choices in a family law matter. John is equally comfortable negotiating out of Court, or representing clients in Family Court. Because of the greater emotional and financial cost of Family Court proceedings, John helps clients to consider alternative options and processes before going to Family Court.

John is familiar with a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution processes and has advised clients who have participated in Mediation, Collaborative family law and other processes.

John served in the Canadian Army Reserve from 2002 to 2011 in the Infantry and Artillery corps. Today he spends his spare time skiing, bicycling or at the family cottage with his wife Laura.

Laura C. Boyd

Laura’s practice focuses on residential real estate (buying, selling and refinancing homes), but she is experienced in family law litigation, residential real estate and estate planning, as well as criminal law and provincial offence matters. Prior to opening Ewen Boyd LLP, Laura practiced at some of Simcoe County's top law firms. Ewen Boyd LLP is a boutique law firm run by husband/wife team John and Laura. Together, they aim to provide a client driven response to families' legal needs.

Laura's clients often remark that she is approachable, and down to earth. She believes that the relationship between a lawyer and client is often the result of stressful life changes, and she is here to simplify the process and keep you informed.

Over her career Laura has helped many families in residential real estate, marriage and cohabitation agreements, separation agreements, family court litigation, and wills and estate planning. She is sensitive to the emotions involved in separation and assists her clients into a transition out of a marriage and into co-parenting. Laura has bought, sold and mortgaged residential real estate for her clients across Ontario and always finds joy in helping families or young adults in buying their dream home. At all stages, Laura is available to advise, and prepare a Will and Power of Attorney for her clients.

Laura is a volunteer in her community. She has been involved in several local Charities, including Green Haven Women’s Shelter where she had roles including, president, vice chair, and secretary. Laura is a Board member of the Barrie Real Estate Lawyers Association “BRELA”. She has also spent time volunteering with animal based charities including the SPCA and Kids for Turtles.

In her spare time, Laura enjoys going to the cottage with her husband, kayaking and hiking, skiing, jogging, horseback riding and spending time with her pets.
